• Order was instituted on 29 May 1976 as Civil Guard Medal Of Merit. Law of 29 June 2012, raised the status to an order, establishing a new class - Grand Cross.
• Order is awarded to members of the Civil Guard in recognition of outstanding and meritorious services during the performance of their duties in combat, or in peacetime.
• Order is awarded in five classes: Grand Cross, Gold Cross, Silver Cross, Cross with Red Distinction, and Cross with White Distinction.
