- Medal was instituted on 22 December 1948.
- Medal was awarded to participants in the resistance movement against the German, Italian and Bulgarian troops during the Second World War.
- There are two types of the medal: from 1948-1982 - with a reverse inscription "ΕΘΝΙΚΗ ΑΝΤΙΣΤΑΣΙΣ", from 1982 - a reverse inscription "ΕΘΝΙΚΗ ΑΝΤΙΣΤΑΣΗ".
- Greek resistance - involved armed and unarmed groups from across the political spectrum that resisted the Axis occupation of Greece.
