Order was instituted on 25 July 1980 as the fourth class of the Order of Barbados.
Order was awarded for meritorious work in the civil, fire, military, police, prison or other protective services or in any other similar field of endeavour.
Order awarded in two grades: Barbados Service Star and Barbados Service Medal.
