- Medal was instituted in 1884 by King Chulalongkorn.
- Medal was awarded to soldiers who defended the northern part of Siam from the invasion of Haw tribesmen.
- Haw wars - were fought against Chinese quasi-military forces invading parts of Tonkin and the Siam.
