Order was instituted on 26 January 1937.
Order is awarded to members of the Armed Forces who have performed acts of courage and efficiency in armed conflict or military operations and which have required very significant military or command skills.
Order was awarded in single class from 1938 to 1942; from 1942 to 1975 the order was awarded in four classes and for each class the awards with palms were added; from 2003 the order is awarded in single class.
