Order was created by King of Spain Charles III on 19 September 1771. The Order was formally converted to a civil order in 1847.
Order is awarded to the citizens who, with their effort, initiative and work, have brought a distinguished and extraordinary service to the Nation.
Order is awarded in five grades: Collar, Grand Cross, Grand Commander, Commander, and Knight.
