- Medal instituted on 15 April 1842 by the Inspector General of the Royal Irish Constabulary.
- Medal awarded to Officers and men of the Royal Irish Constabulary for gallantry or meritorious service.
- The first type of the medal has the inscription "REWARD OF MERIT - IRISH CONSTABULARY" while the second type has the inscription "REWARD OF MERIT - ROYAL IRISH CONSTABULARY".
