Medal was instituted by Prince Günther on 8 February 1899.
Medal was awarded for commendable actions and good service in the arts and sciences, trade and commerce, and agriculture.
Medal was awarded in two classes: silver and bronze.
On 21 August 1917, a clasp with the date '1917' was donated for outstanding services during the war through loyal work, good service and other commendable deeds.
