Order instituted by Decree 91343 of 18 June 1985.
Order awarded to Brazilian and foreign military personnel for exceptional service to the Armed Forces.
Order awarded in five grades: Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight.
In 2002, this Order was replaced by the Order of Defence Merit.
