- Order was instituted by Prince Leopold IV on 30 May 1910 in honor of his wife, Princess Bertha von Hesse-Philippsthal-Barchfeld.
- Order was awarded to women of the principality for achievements in the field of charity and social sphere.
- Order was awarded in four classes: order with crown, order without crown, cross of merit for women, and medal of merit for women.
- Order with crown was awarded only twice: to Princess Bertha, on 30 May 1910, and to Princess Anne, on 30 May 1922.
