- Order founded by King George V on 4 June 1917.
- Order awarded to citizens of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth for outstanding achievements in the arts, literature, music, science, politics, industry or religion.
- There are three variations of the order that differ in the reverse inscription according to the reigning monarch of the period.
- Members are entitled to use the post-nominal letters CH.
