Order founded by King George V on 4 June 1917.
Order awarded to citizens of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth for outstanding achievements in the arts, literature, music, science, politics, industry or religion.
There are three variations of the order that differ in the reverse inscription according to the reigning monarch of the period.
Members are entitled to use the post-nominal letters CH.
