Medal was instituted by Grand Duke Friedrich I on 30 September 1866.
Medal was awarded to people who saved lives and property through courageous and self-sacrificing actions.
Medal was awarded in III classes: Large Gold Medal, Small Gold Medal and Silver Medal.
From 1908 the medal was awarded with the profile of the Grand Duke Frederick II (type II).
