Medal was awarded for exemplary service in the fields of art and science.
Medal was awarded in II classes: Gold Medal and Silver Medal.
There are IV types of the medal: I type - with the portrait of Grand Duke Leopold (1848-1855); II type - with the portrait of young Grand Duke Friedrich (1857-1869); III type - with the portrait of Grand Duke Friedrich (1873-1908); IV type - with the portrait of Grand Duke Friedrich II (1908-1918).
