Order was instituted on 28 July 1939.
Order is awarded to Venezuelan citizens and foreigners who have contributed to the sciences, to the progress of the country, to the humanities or who have exemplified outstanding merits.
Order is awarded in three classes: Grand Cross, Commander and Knight.
Francisco de Miranda - Venezuelan military leader and revolutionary.
