Order instituted by Law N° 14.955 on 13 November 1979.
Order awarded to civilians and military personnel, who provided distinguished service to the Uruguayan Army.
Order awarded in fife classes: Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight.
Order was repealed on 6 March 1985.
José Gervasio Artigas - is a national hero of Uruguay.
