Medal was instituted in 1983.
Medal was awarded to all military personnel who have served for an accumulated period of 3 years in the below mentioned areas since 23 July 1983 to 01 January 2010 in the country's Northern and Eastern provinces during the course of the Sri Lankan Civil War.
Sri Lankan Civil War - was a civil war fought in Sri Lanka from 1983 to 2009.
