Order is instituted in 1963.
Order is awarded to distinguished educators on 25 June of each year for outstanding contributions to education in the country.
Order is awarded in five grades: Collar, Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, and Officer.
Francisco Marroquín - was the first bishop of Guatemala.
