Decoration was instituted by Grand Duke Friedrich II on 24 December 1915.
Decoration was awarded to men and women who distinguished themselves during the war in the care for refugees and wounded.
Decoration with oak leaves between the arms of the cross was awarded for services rendered in the war zone.
