- Medal instituted by Decree 3468 of 8 March 1865.
- Medal awarded to Brazilian soldiers and sailors who resisted the invasion of Uruguay by Paraguayan forces. The main episode of the war was the takeover of the city of Paysandú by Brazilian troops, with support from the Brazilian Police, after a two month siege. The square capitulated on 2 January 1865. The war ended on 20 February 1865 with the occupation of Montevideo by the Allies.
