Order of Leopold II

Ordre de Léopold II

  • Order instituted on 24 August 1900 by King Leopold II.
  • Order awarded to both Belgians and foreigners for meritorious service to the sovereign of Belgium.
  • Order have five classes and three medals.
  • Order have III types: type 1 with central disk showed an enamelled blue, black and white crest of the Congo Free State and the motto "Travail et Progrès" (1900-1915), type 2 with central disc features a lion with the motto in French "L'union fait la force" (1915-1951) and type 3 with central disc features a lion with bilingual motto.
