Decoration instituted on 23 November 1801.
Decoration awarded to military chaplains for outstanding acts in wartime and for meritorious service in peacetime.
Decoration awarded in two classes: gold and silver.
From 13 December 1916, the cross for brave and successful conduct was awarded with swords on the ribbon.
Decoration awarded with red and white striped triangle ribbon for wartime merits and white ribbon for peacetime merits.
