Medal instituted in 1825 by King William I.
Medal awarded to the citizens of the kingdom for merits in art, science and crafts.
From 1865 to 1892, the medal was awarded with the profile of King Charles I.
The medal has two classes, different in design: a large medal (diameter 48.8 mm) and a small medal (diameter 34.6 mm).
