Medal instituted in 1825 by King William I.
Medal awarded to the citizens of the kingdom for merits in art, science and crafts.
From 1852 to 1864, the medal was awarded with the profile of King William I.
Medal have two classes, different in design: a large medal (diameter 48.8 mm) and a small medal (diameter 34.6 mm).
