- Order instituted on 1 November 1705 by Augustus II the Strong. Order became Poland's highest decoration by act of Parliament of 4 February 1921. Order was once again reinstated on 26 October 1992.
- Order awarded to the most distinguished Poles and the highest-ranking representatives of foreign countries.
