- Medal was instituted by Law no.85 of 9 October 1950.
- Medal is awarded to both Icelanders and citizens of other countries who have rescued Icelandic and foreign people from life-threatening conditions in Icelandic land or in Icelandic jurisdiction.
- Medal is awarded in two classes: gold and silver. The gold medal shall be awarded to those who verifiably risk their lives or health in rescue operations. The silver medal shall be awarded to those who are demonstrably actively involved in a major rescue operation.
