- Medal was instituted on 24 June 1982.
- Medal is awarded to members of the Army who, through distinguished actions in the line of duty or while representing the Armed Forces abroad, distinguish themselves through their outstanding merits that benefit both the Army and the Republic of Guatemala; to both foreign civilians and military personnel who, demonstrate actions of brotherhood, friendship, and loyalty to the Guatemalan Army.
- Medal is awarded in two classes: silver and bronze.
- Lycaste skinneri - is a species of epiphyte orchid, Guatemala's patriotic symbol.
