  • Medal was instituted on 19 August 1812.
  • Medal is awarded to individuals for saving life from drowning.
  • Until 1864 the medal was awarded in two classes: gold and silver. After 1864 the medal is awarded in silver.
  • There are several types of the medal, depending on the reigning monarch.
  • Type I - Frederick VI. 3 gold medals, 118 silver medals, and 207 silver medals without ring were awarded.
  • This type of medal has four varieties.


  • Type II - Christian VIII. 45 silver medals and 53 silver medals without ring were awarded.


  • Type III - Frederick VII. 2 gold medals, 66 silver medals, and 66 silver medals without ring were awarded.


  • Type IV - Christian IX. 593 silver medals and 154 silver medals without ring were awarded.


  • Type V - Frederick VIII. 121 silver medals and 69 silver medals without ring were awarded.


  • Type VI - Christian X.


  • Type VII - Frederick IX.
