- Medal was instituted by Decree-Law No.30 of 10 December 1979.
- Medal is awarded to soldiers of the Revolutionary Armed Forces in active, reserve and retired military service who have distinguished themselves during the perfomance of the international duty.
- Medal is awarded in two classes.
