Medal was instituted by Presidential Decree number 1793 of 14 April 1940.
Medal was awarded to representatives of prominent domestic and foreign institutions for their services in strengthening and disseminating the ideals of unity and brotherhood of the peoples of America, as well as for outstanding services of citizens of the American continent in science and art, which have earned the recognition and gratitude of the continent.
