Order instituted by Decree 38162 of 28 October 1955 and modified by Decree 65495 of 5 November 1971.
Order awarded to domestic and foreign citizens who have contributed exceptional services to the field of education in Brazil.
Order awarded in five grades: Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight.
