- Medal is awarded to individuals for the most conspicuous gallantry.
- Until 1887 the medal was awarded in two classes: gold and silver. After 1887 the medal is awarded in silver.
- There are several types of the medal, depending on the reigning monarch.
- Type I - Christian VII. 1 gold medal and 23 silver medals were awarded.
- Type II - Frederick VI. 4 gold medals, 70 silver medals, and 30 silver medals without ring were awarded.
- This type of medal has four varieties.
- Type III - Christian VIII. 8 silver medals were awarded.
- Type IV - Frederick VII. 1 gold medal and 15 silver medals were awarded.
- Type V - Christian IX. 5 gold medals and 61 silver medals were awarded.
- Type VI - Frederick VIII. 17 silver medals were awarded.
- Type V - Christian X.
- Type VI - Frederick IX.
- Type VII - Margrethe II.
