Medal was instituted on 8 May 2009.
Medal is awarded to officers, generals, senior officers and servicemen who distinguished themselves in military service in the State Border Service of the Republic of Azerbaijan until 18 August 2009, as well as those who actively participated in the creation and strengthening of the Border Service of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and retired officers, as well as other persons who made a special contribution to the development of the State Border Service.
