- Medal instituted on 29 December 1922 as the Medal of the Order of the British Empire for Meritorious Service.
- Medal was awarded for meritorious civil or military service worthy of recognition by the Crown.
- Medal was divided into military and civil divisions. Military version have a white central stripe on the ribbon.
- Since 1957, a silver emblem of crossed oakleaves worn on the ribbon was awarded to denote awards of gallantry.
- Recipients were entitled to use the post-nominal letters "BEM".
