Distinction was instituted by Decree-Law No.30 of 10 December 1979.
Distinction is awarded to Cuban people in recognition of their accomplishments over twenty-five years or more in the field of education and science, and for maintaining an exemplary and consistent attitude towards revolutionary principles.
There are two types of medal reverse: SNTЕC (Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educacion y el Ciencia) and SNTECD (Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educacion, Ciencia y el Deporte).
Rafael María de Mendive - was a Cuban poet.
