- Medal was instituted in 1906.
- Medal is awarded for especially meritorious service to the Royal House, and particularly to members and servants of the Royal Court. The medal may also be awarded to foreign nationals, usually in connection with state visits and visits of the King abroad.
- On the obverse of the medal is the portrait of the reigning King with his name and motto, so there are three types of the medal.
- Medal is awarded in two classes: gold and silver.
