• Order is awarded for distingushed merit or services to the state or the sovereign.
• Order is awarded in five grades: Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer, and Companion.
• In 1893, the Orders of the Hawaiian royal dynasty ceased to exist due to the deposition of the monarchy.
• Kalākaua I - king of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi.
