Order is instituted by King Kalākaua I on 28 September 1875.
Order is awarded for services to the sovereign and the kingdom.
Order is awarded in six grades: Collar, Knight Grand Cross, Knight Commander and Companion.
In 1893, the Orders of the Hawaiian royal dynasty ceased to exist due to the deposition of the monarchy.
