Orden was instituted by Prince Georg on 23 October 1899.
Orden was awarded for services in the arts and sciences.
Orden was awarded in two classes: 1st class was a silver cross with crown and green enameled laurel wreath; 2nd class consisted of an oval medal. From 1902, the 2nd class was a silver cross.
