Order was instituted by Count Regent Ernst von Lippe-Biesterfeld on 9 June 1898.
Order was awarded to people who have made special contributions to the arts and sciences.
Order was awarded in three classes: the order with a crown, the order with oak leaves, and the order on the ring.
Initially, Orders of all degrees were worn on ribbon. From 23 February 1910, the first class was worn as a neck cross.
