- Order was awarded to people who have made special contributions to the arts and sciences.
- Order was awarded in three classes: the order with a crown, the order with oak leaves, and the order on the ring.
- Initially, Orders of all degrees were worn on ribbon. From 23 February 1910, the first class was worn as a neck cross.
