Order was instituted on 2 October 1990. And re-established in 1994.
Order is awarded to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the development of democracy, humanity and human rights.
Order is awarded in five classes.
Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk - Austrian-Czech politician, sociologist and philosopher, who as an eager advocate of Czechoslovak independence during World War I became the founder and first President of Czechoslovakia.
