• Order was awarded to national or foreign persons for diplomatic or consular merits, special missions and outstanding services rendered to Cuba and humanity.
• Order was awarded in four classes.
• Carlos Manuel de Céspedes - Cuban planter who freed his slaves and made the declaration of Cuban independence in 1868.
